Two charged in shooting on Vernon and Mayflower Streets
After six days of beating the bushes, rounding up and bringing in a continuous parade of suspects, police have made their first arrests in connection with the shooting of two undercover police officers and a civilian last weekend. Forty-two year old electrician Brian Brown and twenty-eight year old stevedore Carlos Abram have been charged with four counts of attempted murder and four counts of use of deadly means of harm. The police have also impounded a small blue car they believe was used in the incident. Witnesses said that on Sunday, November seventh several men in a small vehicle pulled up to a shop at the corner of Mayflower and Vernon Streets and opened fire. Joseph Panting, who was standing by a shop, was shot twice in the back. Two plainclothes police officers were also shot. But while the police have made an arrest, Christy Castillo, the Police Public Relations Officer says they do not yet have a motive for the shooting. Castillo says additional suspects are still being sought. Brown and Abram are expected to appear in Magistrate’s Court on Monday. No arrests have been made in the murder of Raymond Williams who was shot to death in his car near the municipal airstrip on November fourth.
