Garifuna thanksgiving mass at St. Martin de Porres Church

A Garifuna Mass of Thanksgiving is being held tonight at St. Martin de Porres Church. Although it is an annual event, the focus this year is on the youth and members of the Hamalali Irahuyun or “Voices of the Children” are planning and participating in most aspects of the mass. The Belize City Garifuna Choir, which performed at the candlelight vigil held for the murdered children will also lend their talents. The service is to show solidarity as well as give thanks for all of the obstacles the Garifuna people have overcome as well as help them count their many blessings. Organizers say all are welcome and that English translations will be provided for many of the songs, prayers and readings. The mass will be celebrated by Bishop O.P. Martin. Co-celebrants are Father Calistus Cayetano and Father Larry Nicasio. The service begins at seven p.m. at St. Martins.
