Crime Prevention Council has first meeting
Since 1998, the Ministry of National Security has been strengthening the Police Department to help combat crime. Today the ministry introduced yet another initiative. A National Crime Prevention Council composed of community-based organizations, professional bodies and the private sector has been established to study crime and violence in Belize. They will recommend policies and oversee the investigation of complaints from the public against the police. This afternoon the council met for the first time.
Jorge Espat, Minister of National Security
“We know that to respond to the rapidly changing and increasing complex crime problem, the police need the invaluable cooperation and assistance of our citizens and institutions. The police cannot carry the burden alone; others need to help because crime is everybody’s responsibility.
You can help us reduce the threat and the incidents of
crime, enhance the safety and security of our communities, positively influenced the work environment of our security personnel and enhance the right of citizens. I trust that each of you brings a different and unique perspective to the National Crimes Prevention Council. Your experience, your ideas and your perspective, your judgement can help in reshaping our Police Department and providing a more proactive and service oriented Police Department.”
It was also announced that the way identification parades are conducted will be improved to protect victims and witnesses who come forward. So far the police have not made any arrests in the murder of Raymond Williams near the Municipal Airstrip or the Vernon Street shooting of a civilian and two police officers. Press Officer Christy Castillo says they have questioned a number of people and detained two persons in connection with the Vernon Street shooting.
