Yabra defeats Sagitun
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re fully tuned into this edition of Sports Monday. The city waited for two weeks to view the B.F.L.’s battle for supremacy and finally on Sunday the only two remaining undefeated teams faced off at the M.C.C. Grounds.
As host Culture Yabra gives way to the league leader Sagitun of Independence and yes, we’re underway. It’s just four minutes into the ball game when Brendt Burgess finds number nineteen with a header which stuns Willie Bo with a quick left foot push and the south strikes first. However, Sagitun finds no time to savor the lead when two minutes later Norman “Tilliman” Nuñez strikes to David “Manu” McCauly and the left foot smashes it home for the equalizer. Two goals in six minutes people and you know this is a ball game.
Burgess gets his shot at giving Sagitun the lead after creating space but the big finish is lacking. It’s more Sagitun when Wilmer Lopez penetrates into the danger zone and cries penalty when he gets taken down but Barragan said, “it’s all ball” and the referee agrees.
Nevertheless a bad decision by Darren Hinds gives possession to Esteban Hall. He pushes the pill across the goal mouth; Muschamp tries to clear but it’s Norman “Tilliman” Nuñez who smokes it for the two-one Yabra lead. Sagitun looks for the equalizer but it only affords Willie Bo with the opportunity to come up with the big time save. At the half the two-one score is intact.
So we go to the second and it’s the Independence team looking for the equalizer but again Willie Bo stands firm. Willie Bo takes one for the team in a crash with Brendt Burgess but no goal, no permanent headache, no permanent damage. Is this the equalizer people? Close, but no cigar.
At the other end Norman Nuñez lets the south off the hook with a punch from pointblank range that can’t get pass Hinds. Again Sagitun cries penalty when Lopez is taken down from behind inside the eighteen and again the referee shouts, “play on.”
Play on, Yabra does. The long kick from midfield finds a streaking Norman Nuñez and this time he does not pardon Sagitun, scoring Yabra’s third in real professional fashion. “Tilliman” looks for his third off a spotkick from Esteban Hall but the ball has too much pace. Sagitun still presses the action as the tandem of Lopez and Burgess hook up but the header sails just over the crossbar as Yabra goes on to post the three-one big “W” to move to the head of the class with thirteen points in undefeated fashion. Of course Sports Monday says congratulations to the city team.
In other scores from the Regent Insurance Cup Tournament from over the weekend San Pedro Dolphins bombed Real Verdes four-one at the Norman Broaster Stadium, Ambergris Turquoise and Juventus battled to a scoreless stalemate out at the island while the Grigamandala/ La Victoria matchup was rained out at Dangriga.
That’s it for now. We invite you back same time, same place. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
