Manatee calf transported to Belize Zoo
When all options in Mexico failed, the Marine Mammal Stranding Network found help for Woody the orphaned manatee calf right here at home. The Belize Zoo has offered to help with his care and he will be taken care of there by zoo personnel and stranding network members until he is two years old, old enough to be released back into Belizean waters. He was transferred to the zoo this afternoon. Woody was found two weeks ago off Buttonwood Bay. It is believed his mother was either killed or was too sick to care for him. Volunteers have been bottle feeding Woody and monitoring his health around the clock.
