Two to be charged for Burgess murder

Story Picture
One week after forty-four year old Winston Burgess was gunned down outside the Caribbean Shipping Agency on Albert Street, the Criminal Investigations Branch says they are about to bring charges against two young men. Eric Savery and Gregory Goff are in custody and should be charged sometime Thursday. Inspector Mario Vernon, Head of C.I.B. says they will be charged with murder and conspiracy since the evidence suggests the two monitored Burgess’ movements prior to the shooting on October twelfth. Burgess, a moneylender, visited the shipping office every Tuesday morning to meet with some of his clients. That morning witnesses say they observed two men, one wearing a Halloween mask, put down their bicycles on the grounds of St. John’s Cathedral and approach the victim as he made his way across the street. Witnesses allege that a struggle ensued when the men tried to rob Burgess and that one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him as he reached behind a pickup truck. Police recovered an expended shell and a baseball cap at the scene. Police say their information indicated one of the shooters borrowed the cap from a friend and that it was pulled off during the struggle. Vernon says they have also detained the owner of the cap.
