Grigamandala beat Acros Bombers

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this Tuesday version of Sports Monday.

We take you inside week four of the B.F.L.’s Regent Insurance Cup Tournament. We go to the M.C.C. Grounds for the clash of the cellar dwellers starring Grigamandala and Acros Bombers, both looking for their first semi-pro win.

It’s just the opening minutes when a monster spot kick from deep midfield crashes into the Bombers’ net but Referee Pelayo had ruled indirect free kick and the ball had not touch any one to negate the goal. A few minutes later, a proper service from off the right foot provides an easy scoring change for Dangriga, but the execution is disappointing.

Still it’s Dangriga in control and a shot from outside the eighteen smashes on the crossbar to create a bit of excitement. Folks it’s some twenty minutes deep when Acros Bombers finally launches something to threaten the Dangriga goal but the spot kick is easily corralled by Stanley Reneau.

Meanwhile if they say good things come to those who wait, only the reverse can happen if you wait too long. It’s some half an hour in when Erwin Flores mounts an individual effort and the left foot stretch gives Griga its second goal in four outings, more importantly it puts them ahead one-zip.

Pumped up the southern team wants more and a rightaway volley almost gets the job done except for the heroics of the Bombers keeper. At the other end the Bombers get their turn to score but instead allow Reneau to come up with the big-time save and at the half its a one-zip Griga lead. Of course Dangriga wouldn’t be Dangriga without the drums which take over the half.

So we go to second half and Dangriga looks to strike immediately but the Bombers show tough defensive on this sequence. Off a corner kick, the Bombers could force the equalizer and while it’s close there ain’t no cigar. On the very next play down field it’s Grigamandala looking for the icing only to see the ball ricochet off the near upright. The Bombers could tie this ball game here people but the weak right foot push doesn’t even get past the defensive player in front of the goalkeeper.

A trick shot by the Bombers late in the ball game inches outside the sticks. When the long whistle comes it brings Grigamandala it’s first season win while Acros becomes the first team to loose three games from four outings.

In other results from the B.F.L.: Juventus hurt Real Verdes two-one at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday. Verdes loses for the first time this season. Sagitun remains undefeated but it’s from a one-one draw Sunday against Belmopan Bandits, the only other undefeated team. Culture Yabra settled for a disappointing scoreless stalemate with La Victoria at Corozal and out at the island San Pedro Dolphins dumped Ambergris Turquoise three-zip.

Turning to the boxing scene the Belize Team inside the seventh Central American Boxing Championship at Guatemala gave a creditable performance with all eight amateur fighters returning with a medal.

Darwin Mendez at one hundred twenty-seven pounds, brought home bronze. So did Garth Longsworth at one hundred forty-five pounds and Joseph Eagan at one hundred thirty-five pounds.

The remaining five brought home silver: Arlington Pandy at one hundred eighteen pounds, Moses Sculph at one hundred sixty pounds, Kelvin Middleton at two hundred pounds, Kent Martinez at one hundred eighty pounds and Michael Soberanis at one hundred sixty-six pounds.

We say congratulations to one and all.

That’s it. We invited you back same time, same place. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
