Police Say Deadly Kraal Road Shooting isn’t Double Murder

According to ASP Yearwood, the incident is not being investigated as a double murder, notwithstanding the fact that police have not determined whether the weapon used to kill Guy is a licensed firearm.

“It is not a double murder, it’s a murder and a loss of life investigation.  One, the shooter that attacked Mr. Gary Young, he made his target.  He was just unfortunate that one of the friends of Young returned fire.  So in all essence, he was the orchestrator that initiated the crime, one; had Mr. Matthew Guy survived he probably would have been charged for murder, but like I said, there and then he was not allowed to flee the scene and with that return fire from someone in that yard where Mr. Young died, we had classed it as a loss of life investigation.”

“How do you arrive at that in the absence of perhaps first being able to ascertain whether the weapon used to fire back is licensed?”

“That’s why I am saying we are investigating it, but for us to categorize it as a murder in the beginning, we would be wrong also.  So at the end of our investigations we will be guided by the D.P.P.’s office as to what, if any charges, would be filed against the person or persons that returned fire.”
