Frontier Flights from P.G.I.A. to Denver and Orlando
There is good news today for Belize’s tourism industry which was all but decimated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourist arrivals are up and Frontier Airlines will soon be offering direct flights from Denver and Colorado to Belize beginning in December. We spoke to Chairman of the Belize Tourism Board, Evan Tillett, via zoom today about the rebound for tourism.
Evan Tillett, Chairman, Belize Tourism Board
“The conversation with Frontier started maybe in ‘07. It has been on and off. But really, it has been the vision of the Minister of Tourism, and the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, to take a very aggressive posture as it relates to air route development for our country. So, we have an airline development committee that does the heavy lifting in terms of negotiating and having meetings with airlines that we feel are strategic. Hence, since we started to talk with Frontier late last year, we have been back and forth. And, finally it has come to where it is today. And, they are now announcing direct flight from Denver and Orlando in December. In the time of a pandemic, what will determine if people will travel or not, health and safety is still a critical part of it. Belize is in a super position in the sense that the government has done an excellent job in managing the COVID situation. And, the B.T.B. and the Ministry of Tourism has also done fairly well in terms on developing a nine point checklist which sends a message to the world that Belize is a safe destination.”
Tillett told News Five that visitor numbers are increasing and the Belize Tourism Board expects the upward growth to continue. Over nineteen thousand visitors were registered for the month of May and July registered over twenty-six thousand visitors. B.T.B. says July is on track to surpass June.
