PBL Hoping for Business as Usual on Tuesday
And while negotiations are ongoing, C.W.U.’s twenty-one day notice of intended strike action comes due August third. C.E.O. Lane is hopeful, however, that it will be business as usual at the Port of Belize on Tuesday.
Andy Lane, CEO, Port of Belize Limited
“That notice matures on the third of August, so Tuesday of next week, which coincides with the day the Tribunal will start its discussion. And, it is my understanding that so long the Tribunal is in progress, coupled with the fact that we continue our discussion with the CWU, and then there is no reason to invoke the industrial action. That would, of course, be premature. And, I can’t say that it will be illegal. But, it will go against the concept of the Essential Services Act. That has to be respected. I hope that when Tuesday morning comes around it is business as usual. We might have our differences, but we need to keep the business going. Again, it is about the competitiveness, about being consistent, and stable in the service we offer. A strike doesn’t do anybody any favors. It will damage my business. It will further take earnings away from my staff. Nobody wants to be in position.”
