Cruise ship welcomes Belizean passengers
If you’ve seen the ads on TV and thought cruises were only for wealthy Americans, think again. One Belizean tour company has got a sweet deal that lets you board a cruise ship in Belize, spend three nights aboard ship and then fly back from Miami for less than a thousand Belize dollars.

“We’re looking at a very attractive price that starts at around nine hundred Belize dollars including return airfare, so we think that this is something Belize people will grasp a chance to experience. The ship is of course very nice: it’s got casinos, excellent dining. All meals on the ship, I should add, are included in the price. And I just think it’s a great opportunity for Belizeans to experience.”
Gegg says the cruise ship season has been slow but looks very promising.

“Overall I think we’re looking at approximately a hundred visitations between next week Thursday and the end of April so we’re extremely optimistic about the prospects and what lies ahead for us.”
With the increased number of tourists visiting Belize City, Gegg says there are plans to improve the activities available to them, like the proposed tourism village.

“In the meantime, we have to work with what we have which is the facilities here at the Radisson and they plan to create breakwaters and improve and upgrade the facilities to make lives easier for all of us who are trying to capture some of that cruise ship industry dollar.”
Studies done by the Cruise Ship Association have shown that one cruise ship in port provides income to over two hundred local businesses. And as we head into October, the association is hoping bad weather and even hurricanes won’t keep the ships out of port.

“We need to do everything we can to encourage this type of business and have cruise lines focus on Belize as the port of call and continue to come, into the millenium.”
