UDP Calls of Mass Gatherings but Opposes Mandatory Vaccinations

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Health and Wellness informed the United Democratic Party that it would not support a scheduled convention in Belmopan on Saturday. The planned political event was to have been held at the University of Belize’s gymnasium where former area representative John Saldivar was set to face former mayor Khalid Belisle. Both candidates are vying for the post of caretaker for that constituency. In a release issued by the U.D.P. earlier today, the party acknowledges government’s position in light of the ongoing spike in COVID-19 cases.  As such, it says all major events, including large meetings, rallies and conventions have been put off until the third wave of infections recede.  While the U.D.P. is prepared to assist the Briceño administration in the fight against the pandemic, Shadow Minister of Justice, Senator Darrell Bradley has issued a release in respect of the proposed mandate for COVID vaccinations. The statement which was issued via the U.D.P.’s parliamentary caucus says, “it opposes any effort to make the taking of the vaccine mandatory. The idea of mandating any person to take a vaccine violates our most sacred constitutional norms, including respect for the inviolability of the body, protection of human dignity, freedom of choice and protection of personal privacy.” Notwithstanding the constitutional challenge, there are real concerns regarding the long-term effects of the COVID-19 vaccine.
