Egdell, who is also a practicing journalist overseas, shared her views about Belizean journalism.

“The thing that’s great to me about journalism in Belize is the energy and the passion that you all put into your work. You don’t get paid a lot. It’s not a glamourous job. People might think that it is but it’s not. You work really hard, and you play a really vital role in keeping democracy alive in Belize. The thing that is unique I think in the region is that it is a free press. Certainly everybody has their biases and we have our political organs as well, but I think that the idea that you can come to work as a journalist and there’s no one holding a gun to your head to tell you this is what you need to write, that’s a big freedom that journalists have and like I said, everyone has their economic pressures and there are pressures but it’s a very different scene, compared to a lot of countries that are in what we call the developing world.”
