Kanye King Killed in Gungulung

As Belize City reels from a weekend of savagery, this morning, yet another youth was gunned down execution-style.  But was his killing a retaliatory act for a shooting last night?  King was identified as the gunman in an attack on a family at their house on Mayflower Street in Belize City. Marion Ali went looking for answers.

The bloodletting of the weekend spilled into Monday morning with yet another fatal shooting. It happened shortly after nine a.m. and the victim would be seventeen-year-old Kanye King, a labourer of number five Mayflower Street in Belize City. King was taken down several blocks away from his house, about one hundred feet in some bushes off Park’s Street in the Gungulung area of Belize City. Neighbours heard seven gunshots, and six of them hit their mark. One of King’s relatives told us off camera that the family is left numb by the attack.

“We tek it hard. My ma tek it hard, I tek it hard. My siblings tek it hard. This is the first time we ever lose somebody soh close to we so, yeah tek it really hard.”

But was Kanye King’s death linked to a shooting on the same street that left a father and son wounded in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital? It is a possibility that investigators are looking at. Reports are that sometime after eleven on Sunday night, two youths went to the home of Joseph Panting at number seventy-seven Mayflower Street and called out for one of his sons, Kewan Panting. But Panting answered the door and was shot in the left shoulder. One of the attackers then walked past Panting and over to his two sons who were sleeping and shot at them. But while the father tried to stand in the line of the bullets to protect his sons, one of them, Keon, was shot. Joseph Panting was also hit again as he stood in front of his sons. Both father and son are recuperating in the K.H.M.H.

“All I know so far is that deh kill ah but I nuh know nothing else fi seh if ih mi involved or engaged in anything with anybody, any dispute with anybody else. I’m not sure.  The last thing weh I hear about my bredda is that ih mi di do some work pahn some street, I think Banak Street. I guess ih mi di try keep ihself occupied with something constructive.”

Police have recovered expended nine millimeter shells from the scene.
