Aragon Says There’s No Plan to Tackle Crime and Violence

The crime situation, particularly in Belize City, is spiraling out of control, notwithstanding a nightly curfew and other measures put in place amid the pandemic.  Former law enforcement officer, Elodio Aragon Junior, was also the Minister of State for Home Affairs during the U.D.P.’s term of office.  According to Aragon, there is no plan in place by the present administration to meaningfully tackle the issue of crime and violence.

“One of the saddest things to this is that having no plan means that there is no solution to the crime problem that is facing our communities across this country right now and one of the biggest things that the P.U.P. has failed on, apart from the tackling of crime, is that they have failed to have any kind of meaningful dialogue and consultation with the people of this country and why I say that?  I say that because when you look at where we are right now with crime, man everybody knows that we are not in good standing when it comes to the crime situation in this country.  It has gotten worse and that is because we have the curfew in operation.  Imagine if we did not have the curfew, how many more shootings would we not have had in this country during this time.  Last year, the commissioner said they did well.  They did well because the curfew was installed.”
