We also got a chance to ask the former Prime Minister about Digi’s failure to detect the misuse of the company credit card by the former chairman of B.T.L., now deceased Net Vasquez.  His attorney had challenged some of the credit card charges during the ensuing investigation.  The latest reports suggest that the funds are being repaid.  Barrow reflected on the scandal and his relationship with Vasquez.

“Well look, I will confess right away to be happy to be accused of special pleading on behalf of Net Vasquez. That man had a tremendous influence over me. I am proud of that influence. He was a warrior of the first order. He was with me shoulder to shoulder with respect to the nationalization of DIGI, and with respect so many other else, with respect to public policy, with respect to matters of government and governance. Net Vasquez was fearless without comparison. And so, I am going to confess freely to my bias in favor of Net Vasquez. But, that apart, I don’t know all the details of the credit card saga. It seems to be clear that indeed he did the kind of excessive spending using the company’s credit card, that can’t be countenanced. He had acknowledged that and had said that he was paying back the money. But, if that represented some sort of blot on Net’s legacy, it is a blot that cannot in any way,  waste the legendary contributions that, all told, he made not just to Digi, but to the public, and commercial and governance life of this country.”
