Poet writes about crime

Story Picture
When Sherwin Garcia hears about another act of violence or sees the face of a discouraged Belizean trying to get on in life, he does something about it… he writes a poem. Using the reality of Belizean life as inspiration for his work, he says he writes about issues everyone can identify with. He stopped by Channel Five today to showcase a little of his talent.

Sherwin Garcia, Poet

“”Dis da just me and no other; No mask of taught just a pure brother; Victim of crush walking on earth’s dusk; No one to blame; I cool the same; Trial and tribulation; no bad relation, endurance to go through any bad situation; No come test me; no try impress me; Just be nice; check out the spice.”

In the past I used to be into rap music, about 10 years ago, and that seems to have become very violent, associated with violence and gang banging and so on. So I decided to do poetry which is smoother and something that I believe that could be enjoyed much more in our society.

It is with much pleasure that for me… It is needed that we work, we say these things. We put in works of art, we put it in poetry, in music, in dance, in drama so that who is out there could wake up or try help to open their eyes, if I may say so, and to let them recognize.

“No judge, no complaint; I just relax and try find my true vain; I see no color, see no better. I come the same. No fear nor shame; This da just me, plain as you can see; Sharing sensibly in every way, praising Jah day by day; For love, for food and a place to lay; This da just me.””

Garcia says the power of poetry is hardly ever recognized as a positive influence on society. Garcia’s collection of poems is entitled, “Of Feelings, Faces, Beggars and Kings.” Copies are available at the Angelus Press.
