3 Persons Injured in Shooting on Simon Lamb Street

During news time on Thursday night, shots rang out on Simon Lamb Street in north side Belize City.  Surveillance cameras in the area captured residents scattering and trying to escape any stray bullets during the shooting.  It is believed that the gunman took aim at a resident of the Kelly Street area. Three persons were hit, including the intended target of the gun violence. Here’s a report on the incident.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Around six-thirty p.m., as patrons stood in front of Chon Saan Palace on Kelly Street purchasing food ahead of the seven o’clock curfew, shots were fired. Surveillance footage from the area shows a red car making a left turn off Kelly Street and onto Simon Lamb Street. As the vehicle makes its way towards Freetown Road, a gunman exits the vehicle and takes aim at Kareem Young, a carpenter from Hunters Lane in Belize City. Persons run for cover, trying to avoid being hit by bullets. Young limps around the corner before collapsing by a parked SUV on Kelly Street.

As you can see from the video, Young was bleeding from the upper right thigh. Also injured during the shooting were construction worker Emanuel Wesby of Guinea Grass who was also shot in the right thigh and customer care representative Camryn Briceño of Fabers Road, who was received a gunshot wound to her hand.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Upon arrival, police came across three persons who were suffering from gunshot injury, all of which were not life-threatening. Those persons were taken to the K.H.M.H. where they are admitted in stable condition. We have obtained a number of surveillance footage that we are looking at with a view to try to see if we can identify who those persons are who may be responsible for the shooting.”

Staff members from Chon Saan Palace quickly came to the victims’ assistance and rushed them to the K.H.M.H. where they remain hospitalised in stable condition.

Lee Mark Chang, Owner, Chon Saan Palace

“I think two of my employees were first on the scene and they quickly went for the truck and took them to get the proper medical attention that they needed.”

“The concern, sir, for your business. At the end of the day, your patrons were here when this incident happened.”

“It is a very unfortunate incident and it happened around here. It seems like the criminals have no barriers with where they did their stuff. Based on the video that we saw, the guys were walking down the street and exit over here. I am not sure, but reports are that a red call was following them. I didn’t see, but I did see a red car on the camera. The only thing I saw was based on the footage; it is already out there and I gave it to the police. It is a very sad day that the criminals seem to do what they want whenever they want and how they want. And it is also very sad that it seems that our police department is not picking up the right persons or searching the right persons for guns and these type of stuff that can prevent murders.”
