A Shrine for Beloved Dwayne Gabourel

A memorial has been erected in honor of fifteen-year-old Dwayne Gabourel, who was gunned down in Belize City on the evening of September twenty-fifth.  The third form business student at St. John’s College was loved by his classmates and teachers.  This morning, they placed a monument at the entrance of Landivar Campus to fondly remember the slain teenager as a basketball enthusiast.  The school will also have a memorial service on Thursday and is offering grief counseling for students. The headmaster, Fidel Pol, tells News Five the high school will be holding several other activities to denounce the violence with details to be announced soon. President Mirtha Peralta pointed out that Dwayne Gabourel is the second SJC high school student to be shot this year as a result of gang warfare.

“There is no regard for human life and it is important that we call on the government to address these issues. These issues that are possibly a breakdown in the family structure and that’s why we are having these issues, possibly a problem of unemployment and possibly more programs to address and to help young parents to help with the upbringing of young men in this country. For us, it is especially sad since we are the only all boys school in this country, and so having two of our students for this semester being shot on the streets for apparently no reason is very telling of the times and it’s important for us to do something about it. And so, I call on this country, on the government, the people and the churches, for us to be an integral part of the solution to these societal problems.”
