Households Traumatized by Killing of Dwayne Gabourel

There have still not been any arrests in the murder of Dwayne Gabourel and those persons who were detained earlier this week have since been released. But in the wake of the senseless murder, the viral videos of the killing and the subsequent footage of the crying mother climbing into the pan of a police pickup truck to accompany the fifteen-year-old to the hospital keeps replaying in the minds of all Belizeans. The killing of our Belizean youth continues to send shockwaves across the country. In most households, there is a loss of security, even a fear of sending your teen to the store due to what happened to Gabourel. The promising student was carrying out an errand for his mother when his life was callously taken. Today, Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa spoke of the trauma to the country.

They pray every day together; they made sure that Dwayne had the best education, they made sure to find the money to send Dwayne to school, to believe in him and to fulfil his dreams. It’s just so shattering for an entire country now to watch this happen in front of our eyes, and 2021, we are seeing it all. And so the trauma isn’t just on the family, it is on all of us, all of us. Whether you have a child or not, this hurts every single one of us and it cuts very deep.”
