High Absentee Rates but CXC Results Released

The COVID pandemic, tropical storms and even the La Soufriere volcanic eruption created considerable challenges for secondary students across the region who sat the Caribbean Examinations Council this year. In fact, the Council recorded the highest absentee rate in four years. But today, the results of the CSEC and CAPE exams were released for those students who were able to sit their exams in June. There was a separate testing time for students from St. Vincent due to the volcano and throughout the Caribbean some students took advantage of the chance to defer doing their exam until 2022. There was also a reduction in the School Based Assessment or SBA’s, and a decrease in some of the content area tests as well. Students from Guyana had the highest scores across the board. Registrar and CEO for the Caribbean Examinations Council Dr. Wayne Wesley spoke at a preview event on Wednesday in Guyana. He spoke about the challenges under COVID-19 and the lessons learned about regional education as it stands now and how it must be re-imagined for the future.
