Teachers to demonstrate against crime

Police have yet to make any arrests for the murder of a teacher from the Toledo District and the wounding of his companion earlier this month, but Pio Coc’s colleagues from the Belize Teachers’ Training College and the Belize National Teachers’ Union will protest his death later this week. The B.N.T.U. says the suggestion was made at a memorial service held for Coc last Friday. The teachers will demonstrate against what they see as the increasing wave of crime and violence in the society, particularly against students and teachers. The peaceful march will begin at 3 p.m. at Teachers’ College and end at Constitution Park near the Pound Yard. Pio Coc was gunned down on West Canal by two men on bicycles as he walked with his uncle, Carlos Jackson and Jackson’s wife Albina, around 11:30 p.m. on August 5th. Carlos Jackson was also hospitalized for gunshot wounds. Albina says the men didn’t even try to rob the trio they just started shooting. All three teachers were from San Pedro Colombia and had been attending the summer session at Teachers’ College.
