Story Picture
Despite allegations from area residents that George Murphy was unarmed and severely beaten by police on Sunday night in King’s Park, today he was taken across to Magistrate’s Court to face charges. Murphy, a recent deportee from the United States, was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and harm of a police officer after two officers claimed he attacked them with a knife on Simon Lamb Street. While initial reports were that Murphy had stabbed one of the police officers and had to be subdued with a bullet, hospital sources tell News Five no officers were treated for knife wounds that night. Residents of the area, including a woman who lives at a house at the corner of Simon Lamb and St. Joseph Streets allege police from C.I.B. took Murphy into a vacant lot and beat him with a two-by-four, then shot him. Although police say Murphy was being sought after a witness to a burglary identified him as the culprit he has yet to be charged in connection with the incident.
