Free Book Teaches Children How to Save

Jacito Learns to Save – it’s a new publication, a children’s book authored by former Chief Education Officer Doctor Carol Babb. The book was officially launched today. While it is primarily for children up to eight years old, it can be used to teach anyone about the importance of saving. Financial literacy has long been a passion of Doctor Babb and today, the book became a reality.

“It’s a dream coming true for me because I have worked along with PWC and Peace Work for over ten years and they were pushing financial literacy and as you know, saving is a part of financial literacy. In this story you heard about my grandson Jacito making a goal and then saving towards that goal. And so the whole idea for me is to teach young children financial literacy skills at a very young age so that they can learn to save regularly and when they do borrow, pay back promptly. And so you want them to realise that saving is important for their education, to buy things they need like a house, a car or even going on a vacation. And the book is ideally for children zero to eight years – that is the formative years. As an educator, and you all may know as media personnel too that this is the right time to teach children skills that you want them to develop, habits that you want them to develop.”

“Do you expect that this publication will be used as part of financial literacy curriculums in schools?”

“I am sure it will. While I was chief education officer, I was able to ensure that financial literacy became a part of the primary school curriculum, so it will be useful. We are going to donate some of these books to school so it can be used.”

A thousand copies of the book have been printed and are available at the Holy Redeemer Credit Union free of cost.
