Karl Tillett has weekend football

Story Picture
Good evening and welcome to another edition of Sports Monday. I am Karl Tillett sitting in for James Adderley.

Football headlines this edition and a relatively crowded M.C.C. Grounds was the site of yet another humiliating loss for Belizean soccer. Acros, Belize’s sub-champion took the field against the Salvadoran champion FAS hoping to avenge an away 2-1 loss. Fittingly, perhaps, the crowd was more Salvadoran than Belizean, with fans coming all the way from Salvapan, Belmopan and the Salvadoran flag waved proudly for good reason.

From the onset Acros looked sluggish and at about 5 minutes into the match goalkeeper Newton Lennon set the tone when they made a huge miscue allowing Alberto Fajardo to let loose a canon which mercifully Lennon pushes over the cross bar. Sluggish midfield play makes for unexciting football. Lennon almost does it again with another careless toss which the FAS team failed to capitalize on once more.

At the 13th minute a rare threat comes to naught for Acros and Landy Pinelo’s shot goes wide of the goal. Tough angle! Then Medrano misses a bomb but at the 30th minute he takes a pass from Rodriquez which beats Nolberto and then he boots it past Lennon for the 1 zip lead at the half.

Acros team played hard for the first 10 minutes of the second half but when Medrano shook the net scoring with a header off the foot of substitute Miguel Mariano, it was all but over. Mariano got into the act closing out the scoring with a header as the FAS team played volleyball before they put it away. That’s the way it ended, 3-zip. Acros was never in the game and although FAS did not exactly dazzle, they did more than enough to win.

The news doesn’t get any better as we understand the under 23 team lost by the same score to Nicaragua. In total another bad week for Belize Internationally.

In other news we understand that basketball was upstaged by the Miss Teen Belize Pageant as the stage was not taken down after the pageant Friday night. Can we get something right my people?

On the bright side, next week Sports Monday takes a look at Jaheed Smith, an up and coming track and field athlete. Until then keep your goals in front of you. Love, light, goodnight.
