James Adderley has cricket championships in Lord’s Bank

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this mix of Sports Monday. Mother Nature forced a postponement to the decisive Game III in the National Cricket Championship last weekend but certainly relented Saturday for the conclusion of the series at Lord’s Bank.

We open to find Michael Flowers from Surprise of Lemonal bowling up a single to Ray Bennett of Wicked Eleven from Flowers Bank. This time it’s Clarence Anthony who gets touched for another wicked run. However, the big bat from Flowers Bank today turns out to be Randy Robinson and here he makes easy pickings on the bowler Anthony.

Game II’s hero Ben Robinson was singled out for special attention today but you can’t keep a good man down as he tags Anthony for a ground rule 4 runs; he would finish with 26 runs batted in. But like they say every bad man has his catcher. Surprise brings out Andrew Banner who mows down Randy Rhaburn but not until after he posted a game high total of 44 runs. The clubbing finally ends for Lemonal when the clutch bowler Andrew Banner smokes Winston Flowers Jr. for the final Flowers Bank out. Flowers Bank struck for all of 139 runs in their turn at bat.

So Surprise takes its turn to bat but the real surprise is that David Banner bowls out Brian Banner without a run scored. David would record 3 outs. Dwane Hendy then silences the bat of Calbert Banner with this left-hand bullet. Ben Robinson strikes for 1 of his 4 outs abusing Ray Bennett with his great curve ball and of course a catch by Lionel Robinson off the bat of Garret Banner leaves Surprise in a hole with only 1 batter to go.

But what are the players on the field observing? Oh it’s a fight between two opposing fans and things quickly get out of hand. It’s like you’re watching some kind of action movie. One thing for sure the 2 policemen who were present do an admirable job of containing this melee. Definitely in the future the security forces will realize the bitter rivalry which exists in championship cricket.

Eventually the chaos subsides allowing the action to resume and next Ben Robinson bowls to Andrew Banner who pops it up to Mark Flowers who makes the catch, stopping the Surprise offense at a mere 93 runs giving the 1999 national title to Wicked Eleven of Flowers Bank. Channel Five says congratulations.

Q: “It was a very interesting 3-game series; the Lemonal Surprise team started out pretty fast in the first game; you came back with 2 big replies. Do you wanna tell us how that came about?”

Ben Robinson, Wicked Eleven

“Surprise had a good team but James we have a better team. We lost the first game at Lemonal because we played on a wet field. They had the better of the goals. When they started the goal the pitch was pretty dry and they had the advantage at home.”

Q: “What was the difference in this final game? It was 1 apiece going into Saturday’s big game at Lord’s Bank.”

Ben Robinson

“We sat down and talked about the game every night. Me and the coach, the manager sat down and saw how we lost the first game, how we won the second and how we would play the third to a win.”

Turning to the football scene, our CONCACAF appearances remain in steady decline in terms of quality play. Yesterday National Champ Juventus absorbed a humiliating 4-1 loss to Comunicaciones of Guatemala at the Norman Broaster Stadium while Acros of Belize City needed a whole container to package the 7-zip blow-out they took from Alajuela at Costa Rica. Foreign teams – 11; Belize teams – 1. We all must be a bit embarrassed.

Hey, that’s it; we invite you back same place, same time next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
