Fatal Accident Claims Woman and Child
A ten month old child and a forty year old woman lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident earlier this evening on the George Price Highway near the Mile Eight Community. A News Five team was caught in the middle of it all as they were heading back into the city from an assignment. Paul Lopez files the following report.
Paul Lopez, Reporting
A mother is heard in the background shouting, “my baby dead.”This was the scene at approximately three-thirty p.m. just after a dump truck attempted to overtake a car. When the truck driver realized that a second truck was coming in the opposite late, the truck driver made an attempt to pull back into his lane. But while doing so, the truck pinned the rear driver’s side of the car. Trapped in front of the truck on the driver’s side, the car is dragged along the highway for a moment. The car then slammed into the front of an oncoming tow head with great force. The passenger side of the car was the first to take that second impact. The passenger of the car, a forty year old woman, died upon impact. She had been holding a ten month old child. He was flung from her arms and died instantly. The baby’s mother, who was driving, sustained minor injuries. My cameraman and I were caught in the middle of the accident, and were the first on the scene. Police officers passing in a bus arrived momentarily. Some twenty minutes later, the ambulance arrived. There was not much I could have done to assist the mother, besides kneeling on the ground and acting as a back brace for her to sit upright while waiting for medical assistance. A second passerby gently relieved the mother of dead child. It was a long and sorrowful wait, what felt like hours. When the medical team arrived, they declared the baby and the forty year old passenger dead. The mother lives, but only to tell a tale of loss and grief. Reporting for News Five I am Paul Lopez.
