P.M. attends summit in Rio

Prime Minister Said Musa is joining the leaders of 47 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean for the first joint summit with the European Union this week in Brazil. The meeting in Rio de Janeiro today and tomorrow will examine political, economic and cultural issues to promote human rights and regional integration. The European Union is the second largest investor in Latin America providing 73 million U.S. dollars between 1996 and 97. Central American countries are benefiting from a post-Mitch reconstruction program for health and education and Caribbean countries, including Belize, enjoy trade preferences for bananas, rum and sugar. Prime Minister Musa is accompanied in Rio by Minister of Trade and Investment Ralph Fonseca and Ambassadors Assad Shoman and Salvador Figueroa.
