Sugar Cane Farmers Block Entrance to A.S.R./B.S.I.

Tonight, we open our newscast with unrest in the Sugar Belt. The latest information coming out of Orange Walk to News Five is that B.S.C.F.A. members are currently protesting outside of the A.S.R./B.S.I.’s compound. Reports are that farmers are using their sugar cane trucks to block the entrance and exit of the compound. “They are blocking the entrance, even from their housing. They are blocking the entrance so that new personnel from B.S.I. will be able to leave. Okay, they will not be able leave if B.S.I. will send his equipment to move his trucks, it would create chaos. If B.S.I. would set up, B.S.I. is setting up their equipment on their side. B.S.I. is setting their heavy machinery on their side, which is okay. They can set up their equipment on their side, which is no problem. I thought they were going to try to move the trucks.”

We’ll have more on this developing story from Orange Walk in Wednesday’s newscast.  We note, however, that the last sugar protest resulted in the shooting death of forty-four-year-old Atanacio Gutierrez in February 2009.
