Horace Cadle wins main event in weekend boxing

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this version of Sports Monday. While some basketballers were looking for a fight Friday night, the real fighters were involved in a real international prime time fight card at big Bird’s Isle Sunday morning billed as Belize versus Mexico.

The opening ceremony is complete with the National Anthems of both countries on a new and truly impressive boxing ring bought by Gustavo Torres of Cayo Boxing Gym.

The visitors open with the first win of the series. Estuardo De Leon in the gold trunks of Cayo was not strong enough to over power Miguel Garcia at 120 lbs. and it certainly is no surprise when referee Flores raises Garcia’s hand in victory.

The tide turns in the very next fight people. It’s Joseph Eagan in red facing the Mexican Julio Yamil in blue and here comes the first knock down of the match-up. Eagan forces a standing 8 on his opponent and then the end comes mercifully from a TKO just 1:53 into the first round. Eagan gets the big “W” for Belize to tie the series at 1 apiece.

In the third fight Arlington Pandy from the Cayo Gym takes down his 130 lbs. opponent in the very first round with a left-right combination which Carlos Ramirez couldn’t handle. Pandy was just too much down the stretch but was forced to go the distance for the unanimous win and we say good show P.

The visitors have their last chance at forcing a draw with Moses Sulph and Trujeque Garcia getting together at 160 lbs. It’s a fast start for the Belizean Jamaican and for sure Garcia does not like the way he is being helped back into the ring after getting tagged very hard. In less than a minute and a half it’s all over as Sulph punishes Garcia to the extent that referee Henkis believes he is incapable of continuing. Belize beats Mexico 3-1 in this series.

Meanwhile folks the two best fighters in Belize got together in the main event. Meet Belize’s favorite son Horace Cadle weighting 141 lbs. and the Silver Medalist from San Ignacio Michael Soberanis who won it in the Central American Games at 146 lbs.

In the second round the action heats up and the big surprise is that Cadle is beginning to assert himself. The third begins with a thrilling exchange as Soberanis tries to come back while Horace Cadle, who intends to go pro after this fight, tries to maintain his edge. In the fourth it’s Cadle again with the better of the toe to toe exchanges at the middle of the ring and he stays right in front of Soberanis and being very effective, forces the Cayo fighter into a standing 8 count.

In the fifth and final round Cadle pulls out the full works and floors Soberanis who complains it might have been a low blow but referee Ordonez rules it a knock down. Cadle goes on to grab the main event in a unanimous decision.

It was truly the best fight card in Belize in a long time and we say congratulations to the Belize Building Blocks Association. We want to congratulate Mr. Gustavo Torres of Cayo, David Graham and Leopold Smart from Civic Gym. And yes, the Mexican Embassy which was very instrumental in making that fight possible.

That’s it. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
