Listen to Children and Let Them Share Feelings about School Return

Eli Romero

N.C.F.C. says the conversation surrounding the school reopening rarely takes into consideration the views and perspective of the children themselves.  Romero asserts that they may be facing a challenging time at the thought of readjusting, after being away from the class room for two years.  Romero recommends that parents have this conversation with their children.

Eli Romero, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, National Commission for Families and Children

“Some children, if you talk to them, they don’t want to go back to school because they have started to earn an income. And you know, once you start to earn an income, you say I like to have my own money. And, I think that is where we need to take the conversation, how much have we sat down and spoken to the children. What are the children saying? Do they want to go back to school? And I think we really need to sit down. We talk about children rights and all of these things, and the Convention of the Rights of the child. Article twelve of the Convention of the Rights of the Child says children have a right to be listened to and taken seriously. And, if we take them seriously, I think we will better understand their take and how they feel about it.”
