Special Olympics set for November

Story Picture
After a two-year break, Special Olympics Belize is making a comeback. The event, which is scheduled for November of this year, will feature the sporting talents of children from all over the country. The Coordinator of Special Olympics Belize Dativa Martinez explained that the competition is still in the planning stage.

Dativa Martinez, Coordinator, Special Olympics Belize

“It is a non-profit, non-governmental organization for the promotion of ongoing sports activities for persons with mental retardation. Here in Belize we are hoping to get athletes with mental retardation to compete in our second national games in November of this year. We are hoping that we could organize ourselves in such a way that we could bring athletes from the district to Belize City for our second national games.”

Q: “What type of help does the Special Olympics Committee need?”

Dativa Martinez

“We need lots of help. We are recruiting assistance as much as possible we need volunteers; we need people who are willing to help with moving our athletes from point “A” to point “B”. We need coaches who are willing to help with athletes.”

Those interested in volunteering for Special Olympics Belize are asked to call their offices at 31150.
