Cane Farmer Takes Association Power Struggle to Attorney General

In an update to the ongoing saga of the struggle for control over the Corozal Cane Farmers Association, one farmer says they are now taking the matter to the Attorney General’s Office.   The leadership dispute has been waging for weeks now with two men, namely Vladimir Puck and Everaldo Uk, both claiming the chairmanship.  The main point of contention has to do with Uk’s expulsion from the association in 2019 and whether it was legal.  Puck and his Board of Directors argue that it was.  But Uk is challenging the legitimacy of the 2019 by-law in favor of a 2015 association by-law.  It is an important development, because if successful, it could not only legitimize his membership, but also his position as the newly elected chairman of the association.

On the Phone: Everaldo Uk, Sugar Cane Farmer

“My expulsion was irrelevant, it was unconstitutional, because the correct procedures that the 2015 by-laws had within it as the original by-law, it provides for an amendment to happen for the by-law, but the proper procedures were not followed.  Immediately after my expulsion, I believe these people were expecting me to apply to another association. But, I decided to move through the legal system, because I knew it was unconstitutional. So, I had to challenge this purported amendment through the Supreme Court. This was in 2020, immediately after the meeting of December 2019. But, the case has taken a bit long. You see we are in 2022 and the case has not entered conclusion as yet. This is the fact now, if that purported amendment is being challenged at the Supreme Court, how it that these people is have been using it for the past two years, and it has not been determined by the Supreme Court whether it is legal or illegal.”
