Coastal Erosion Increasing Across Belize

…And, if you think this is only happening in places like Monkey River, Doctor Colin Young says not so fast. Populated coastal areas like Placencia and even the cayes are at risk of erosion as an effect of climate change.

“What Monkey River is showing us, Duane, is what will come to many other communities in Belize because of climate change. If you look at what’s happening in Dangriga, if you see what’s happening in Placencia, in Riversdale, now in Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye – coastal erosion is increasing. And the costs associated with putting up a seawall or building hard structures to protect the coastline is exorbitant, it is extremely expensive.”
