P.B.L. May Still Sue Union to Recover $1M in Losses during Strike

Evan "Mose" Hyde

Last week, the Port of Belize’s indicated that it is planning to seek legal redress for the one million dollars in losses it sustained as a result of the illegal strike actions the Union undertook in January. That may still be on the table because today Andy Lane, C.E.O. at P.B.L., told News Five that, “P.B.L. is considering its options presently”. This morning the C.W.U. president told News Five that, “when and if a law suit comes, we will have a response, no other comment for now”. Viewers may recall that last week Hyde would not concede that the Union’s membership had acted in contravention of the regulations that guides the settlement of disputes in the Essential Services Act.

Evan “Mose” Hyde, President, C.W.U.

“I think illegal is determined by the courts brother Paul. I think unless a court has ruled that we are illegal, you cannot put that on the record with all due respect. I am saying to you that things are confirmed illegal by the courts. I don’t know that any courts have ruled that we have acted illegal. And, I don’t know which body has moved to the courts to deem our action illegal, Sir. Would you at least concede that you are acting in contravention of the Essential Services Act? I concede nothing. I concede that something is deemed illegal when the court deems it illegal.”
