Fake voucher found at Income Tax Department

Earlier this week News Five broke the story about an investigation at the Income Tax Department into fake forms for refunds amounting to over 40 thousand dollars. Today police released details of at least one incident in which it is believed a voucher was falsified, allegedly by an Income Tax Inspector. It is not clear at this point if this case is part of a larger scam. Police say Richard Stain of Hattieville has been detained after the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax Eric Eusey became suspicious of a voucher made out for over three thousand dollars for an employee of the Central Bank. When department personnel checked, the individual never worked at Central Bank and told them he had never even filed a tax return. The paper trail lead back to Inspector Richard Stain who claimed he had found the voucher on his desk, but gave it to a co-worker to process. Stain reportedly asked about the voucher a number of times, and when asked to bring in the person making the claim he refused. Stain has been detained pending charges. Sources at the Income Tax Department told News Five earlier this week that up to 40 thousand dollars in fake refunds may have been “filed” using falsified blue TD-4 employment forms and that they suspected it was an inside job. If this is true, Stain, and perhaps others within the department, may be facing additional charges. Assistant Inspector Eric Eusey, who confirmed he is heading the investigation, has declined to comment.
