LOVE FM News Director on Importance of Fourth Estate
The news director for LOVE FM was also present today. Renee Trujillo says that while many want to be in the news, some are also quick to threaten lawsuits. She too called for a Freedom of the Press Act, but welcomed the opportunity to comment on the current amendment to the Defamation Act under committee review.
Renee Trujillo, News Director, LOVE FM
“Luckily we got a chance to make a comment and the major media houses are here. To ask questions, to make comments, suggestions, get some clarity in terms of what this defamation bill amendment entails and how it is going to impact the major media houses. We report on news all the time. We are constantly getting threats for libel and defamation. People want to be in the news but they don’t want to lead the sensational news, so we are constantly being threatened. So I felt it was important for us to be here to express our views and to see how we can strengthen, protect mainstream media houses. We need to be respected as the Fourth Estate and to incorporate the Freedom of the Press. Enshrine that into the Constitution because we are the representatives of the people. Many times people under estimate, or under value, the media and what we do.”
