Minister of Sports Calls for More Support of Athletes
“They were led like sheep to the slaughter”. That is what the Minister of Youth, Sports and Transportation, Rodwell Ferguson, had to say about the Senior Women’s National Football Team in their match against Panama over the weekend. The game ended in a painful eight-nil defeat against team Belize. After the match, Minister Ferguson made a post on Facebook about the need for greater investments in sporting infrastructure here in Belize. He said, “We are backwards when it comes to infrastructure”. Here is what Minister Ferguson had to say about those comments he made, in an interview courtesy the F.F.B.

“When I am given a responsibility, I want to do it to the best of my ability. So, I did make the post last night. It might be controversial, but I believe it has to be done for the entire country to realize we can excel, we can do much better. Our players are strong. They are very energetic. But, they lack the proper training and time, in camp especially. After discussing with the F.F.B., they have a limited amount of resources to promote football across the country at all levels. So, we are trying to figure how we can partner with them. I always say that the Ministry of Sports and the Department of Sports is the highest body when it comes to Belize in terms of management. There should be collaboration between ourselves and the F.F.B. Together we should be able to make it better for our girls and males that travel across the country, and across the region, and across the world.”
