Habet on Barranco Erosion: “We’re Awaiting A Report from Research Team”
We also asked Minister Habet whether the government will help to salvage what’s left of the Barranco beach after aggressive erosion has washed away much of the shoreline. He said they are waiting for a report from a Cuban research team on what steps to take.
Orlando Habet, Minister of the Environment
“It’s a difficult situation. The bank is very high so it’s prone to erosion so some of the techniques that are being considered are rocks, hanging tires, which wouldn’t be environmentally friendly but maybe it can hold it for a while. And then we had a team from Cuba who was here doing some research last year and we are awaiting a report from them to see what recommendation they have as to how we can address that situation. So we are looking at it. I just mentioned that it’s a very expensive endeavor to do a retention wall or something like that and we don’t know if it would work.”
