Whether your child’s strength is drawing, singing or dancing, he or she is sure to feel like a star during the month of May. That’s when the Bliss Institute is filled with talented children and proud parents. News Five was on hand for the opening of this much anticipated event.

The Seventh Belize District Festival of Arts officially opened with a number of musical items that gave the audience a preview of what is in store in this year’s festival.

Over four thousand students representing twenty-five primary and secondary schools will be in the arts and crafts and performing arts competitions. David Fonseca, Mayor of Belize City in his address did not only have special words of advice for parents but said our children’s artistic abilities need to be encouraged.

“They need to focus their attention on developing their inner abilities and creativity as we shall see over the next month. The parents play a crucial role in the matter of entertaining. Parents have an obligation to provide for their children, not only materially but also spiritually and emotionally. This will include making provisions to come out and support your children in this year’s Belize District School Festival of Arts.”

Following the official opening, the audience was invited to view the displays mounted in the Arts and Crafts competition. Most of the posters highlights concern for the environment. The performing Arts section runs from May seventeenth to the twenty ninth.

Tickets for the Festival of Arts are on sale at participating schools and at the Bliss institute. Be sure to get them early because the Golden Night performances in particular almost always sell out quickly.
