Orange Walk gets computer center

Story Picture
It’s a lofty goal: provide everyone in the community access to a computer and bring the town into the computer age. On Tuesday Orange Walk was one step closer to achieving this dream with the inauguration of an Information Technology Center. The center, which was the idea of the P.U.P. Central Executive Committee in Orange Walk soon gained the support of the town board and is now centrally located on the first floor of the Town Hall. Mayor Reynaldo Burgos spoke about the need for a place where students could learn about technology.

Reynaldo Burgos, Mayor, Orange Walk

“We had several ideas but finally the P.U.P. Central Committee and the Honorable Johnny BriceƱo came up with the idea of a computer center. The Orange Walk Town Board and several citizens helped to prepare where the computer center is right now.

Like I said we are glad to be doing this because it will be of benefit to everybody. I’ve spoken to a few parents and some of them say that they are very glad that this thing is open. They said that when their children asked them for a computer many said that it was out of their reach. So with this it would help them a lot to not have to incur that expense anymore. We encourage everybody to come and use the center.”

Right now there are 13 computers available to students from three to nine p.m. Since the lab opened in March it has been operating at full capacity. There are plans to provide Internet access and printing and scanning equipment. The footage is courtesy of Centaur TV
