Meet the New Homeowners under G.O.B.’s Housing Project
There are new homeowners under G.O.B.’s Housing Project. The new set of homes was handed over to single mothers and women, this time in the Cayo District. Since last December, the rollout of the housing project began, improving the lives of the recipients. The goal is to provide ten thousand houses across the country. At separate ribbon-cutting ceremonies, Edna Hope and Reeana Segura were the lucky recipients from the Cayo North constituency of Michel Chebat.
Reeana Segura, House Recipient
“I am very happy and this is a big accomplishment for me and I am very grateful to the ministers and their team who help me to achieve something this big. It pushes me to want to do better, to go ahead and continue my education since this is a great push for me.”
Edna Hope, House Recipient
“I feel so excited for me and my kids, my family and, like I said, I thank the man up dah top deh, thank God, for making it possible, making it true. I thank my minister, I thank Julius, I thank a lot of people, and I thank my kids for the effort that they did to clean the yard and stuff. I can’t say nothing cause I so excited and I nervous, I don’t have words to say. But I really appreciate that this comes through. This dah something weh I mi di look forward to long time because at least I have something to put over mi head and ina the future, this could be for my children too.”
Michel Chebat, Area Representative, Cayo North
“You know, we have been working for the last six years in this constituency. And from the very start we understood that it is important to give homes to families and to women especially. And part of my commitment in the campaign was especially to empower single mothers and single females with homes. I strongly believe when you empower a woman, you empower a family.”
Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development & Housing
“It is an honour for us to be able to support the women in Belize. And so I believe, even going forward, more than seventy-five percent of the recipients will be women. We are making sure of that. We are changing lives one person at a time and that’s the idea. You are making society more productive. I believe if you educate your society and if they are healthy and they have shelter, they will produce more – both for themselves and for society on its own.”
The way the housing project works is that sixty-seven percent of the cost of the house will be absorbed by G.O.B. and the rest will be paid by the new homeowners at twenty-five dollars a week for ten years.
