Domestic Banks Experience ‘Boom’

Belize’s international reserves now stand at eight hundred and thirty million dollars. According to P.M. Briceño, domestic banks also experienced a boom as a result of a sharp upturn in net foreign assets, largely due to a rebound in the tourism industry. There was also an increase in call center receipts, and a surge in direct foreign investments. Resurgence in sales at the Corozal Free Zone also was a contributing factor. Domestic bank’s liquidity grew to six hundred and ninety three million dollars.

“Recall the prediction, by the previous Prime Minister, when he proclaimed he wept for Belize in fear of devaluation. Mainly, I must say to him and his government’s irresponsible spending plan which was that they would borrow and borrow and borrow until they can borrow no more. You see Madam Speaker; there is a huge difference between the incipience of their administration who had so much and did so little, and our administration who did so much with so little. Imagine what we could have done for our nation with a billion dollars in oil revenues and with what they called the Petro-Caribe bonanza, one billion dollars. You image the roads and the streets, honorable member from Cayo South, what we could have done and help our poor people?  What we could have done to strengthen the police, BDF, Coast Guard? Probably, we never would have had to cut salaries. But, one billion dollars and they just bad spend up the money. They were even bragging about the taco fest they had in Corozal. BTW, where is he? Where is your former leader of the Opposition, present Leader of the Opposition? I think you should know weh part your people deh right?”
