Bakeries are the latest targets for thieves
Two young men have been remanded into custody for attempting to rob and burglarize separate bakeries. The first incident occurred around two-thirty on Thursday at Wahlon’s Bakery on Euphrates Avenue. According to Shane Alarcon, an employee of the bakery, he was inside the shop when a young man entered. Alarcon says that as the teen approached the counter, he took out a red rag and put it over his face, then tried to pull out a pistol from his waist. Fearing for his life, Alarcon reported that he ran to the back of the bakery and called the police. When he returned, the gunman was gone. Police picked up nineteen year old Devon Saldano of West Street and this morning he appeared in court to answer to charges of Attempted Robbery. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to reappear in court on April second.
The next botched incident took place several hours later at Isaray Shop and Bakery on Mahogany Street. Sixty-five year old businessman, Raymond Yu reported to police that when he went to his bakery on Friday, his nephew informed him that someone tried to break in around eleven the previous night. The man accused of the attempted burglary is employee, twenty-nine year old Juan Castro. The Salvadoran national was detained that same night as he came out of the fenced yard. Investigations reveal that the burglar tried to enter the building by cutting the iron latches with a hacksaw blade. Police report that when they detained Castro, they found on him two pieces of blade. Castro was arraigned in court this morning and pleaded not guilty to the charge. During the proceedings, the prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that his immigration status is uncertain and as such, he is a flight risk. Magistrate Tracy Sosa upheld the objection and remanded Castro to prison until April second.
