So how to you prevent yourself from falling victim to scammers? Director Clare offered a couple instructions on how you can protect yourself.
Kent Clare, Director, F.I.U. Belize
“If your bank has certain features it has made available to you, the two factor identification, for example, there are some people who are a little bit slack and don’t want to ensure that they have the highest level of protections. If they have given you the soft tokens, or have made those available, activate them you know. Make sure you are the only one who has access to your phone and those sorts of things. Also, I can’t over stress the fact that the banks is usually not going to be sending you and requesting you to supply them with your password or your user name. They have that already. What you want to do is to log in officially and communicate in that way. Don’t be clicking on attachments and that sort of thing. Usually it is some kind of malware that is going to attach itself and then compromise your device. For those who are thinking I am trying to make a living, we especially heighten these messages that don’t allow your account to be used vicariously by somebody else. Your account is your account. Don’t do third party account where persons are working through you.”
