Poet gives sample of work

News Five often does stories when authors and poets launch a new publication. But today a poet, who is relatively new to the art, twenty-eight year old Sherwin Garcia shared some of his work with us. Garcia says that he started to write poems since 1995 but has loved words since kindergarten. He shared one of his favorite pieces, “Faces”.

“I write poems on a large variety of aspects: on feelings, on social issues and on an occasion, on an event maybe of interest to me. Something that might be happening in our society that is being a plague or that might be plaguing or society or people. Love, I wrote one on that. It’s not about fantasy; I don’t fantasize too much. I mostly deal with reality. It’s that type of poetry that you will find coming out of Sherwin Garcia.”

“Faces sometimes happy, sometimes sad.

Some determine the day they have.

Frightened looks makes me wonder who are the crooks.

Faces of he, faces of she, are these faces lying to me? Undetermine some sweating and wet.

Some of these faces I haven’t seen yet.

Covered up by shades and shields are these faces for real?

Some thin, some a little fatter.

Faces are different; it doesn’t matter.

Check in the mirror.

Look what you will see can it determine you or me?

Some say yes, some say never.

Some faces dull while some faces clever.

Faces of young, faces of old,

some faces have stories untold.

Like age and beauty, some a little creepy.

Some faces have extraordinary beauty.

It’s a wonderful thing for you to see how God created you different from me.

Garcia is in the process of having some of his poems published. In his other life he is a customs officer.
