Justice Brown comes out of retirement

Although efforts continue to find suitably qualified people to fill two vacancies on the Supreme Court, today the Solicitor General Gian Ghandi announced that two Belizeans have been appointed as acting justices to assist with the April Criminal Session. They are retired Chief Justice Sir George Brown and Senior Counsel Wilfred Elrington. The Solicitor General says the appointments are initially for three months, but may be extended if necessary. He says the Commonwealth Secretariat in London is assisting the Belizean government in locating candidates who can fill the vacancies on a permanent basis. Thirteen cases are scheduled for this Supreme Court session and today the murder trial of Patrick Reyes got underway before Judge Elrington. Reyes is accused of the murder of Wayne and Evelyn Garbutt in Teakettle Village, Cayo in 1997.
