Senator Courtenay Calls Agriculture Sector “Robust”

The nation’s agriculture sector has contributed to an eleven point two percent primary sector growth over the past year. The successful rebound of the economy, in the view of Senator Courtenay, is fueled by the performance primarily of the tourism and agriculture sectors. The government, he said, is expanding the agriculture industry further.

Senator Eamon Courtenay, Leader of Government Business

“Our government is renewing the citrus industry with an investment of fifteen million dollars over three years. That money, Madam President, is made available through the Development Finance Corporation. And we continue to work with the farmers to ensure a lawful supply of migrant workers to reap their fruits. More than twenty-three thousand acres are planted in coconut and this new industry is about to abound with a proliferation of fruits – oil and water and other bi-products, Madam President – a new processing plant will soon be inaugurated under the government of the People’s United Party. Indeed, under the leadership of the Hon Abelardo Mai, the most dynamic Minister of Agriculture we have seen for decades, in the tradition of the great Fred Hunter, exciting developments are also taking root in pineapple, soursop, rice and vegetables. Madam President, we pledge to work with the farmers to develop the rural areas. We are delivering on Plan Belize. In fact, as we speak, in Spanish Lookout another fantastic investment is being declared open. The UHT plant under Western Dairies, Madam President, is being opened right now by the Hon. Prime Minister, so that we can have milk made in Belize and stored on the shelf for a long period of time.”
