Motorists Urged To Report Accidents Involving Endangered Animals

A jaguar was knocked down and killed this morning on the Southern Highway. While some people may say it was just a cat, it was a member of the endangered jaguar population, which is protected under Belize’s laws. Anyone in an accident involving endangered animals is required by law to report the accidents to the relevant authorities. In this case, the male jaguar, weighing between a hundred and fifty and a hundred and eighty pounds, was knocked down around eight this morning by a truck near the Kendall Bridge area of Stann Creek. To report road accidents involving wild animals, including jaguars and tapirs in the Toledo District, call the Machaca Forest Station; in Stann Creek, you can call the Savannah Forest Station. There are also hotline numbers in the other districts and one for weekends and holidays which is 615- 5159.
