High School Students Win “Black History” Poetry Contest
Three high school students were honored this week for their winning submissions in the U.S. Embassy’s first Black History Month poetry contest. First-place recognition went to the poem “Black Rose” by Rosa Pinelo of the St. Ignatius High School. Second and third place were awarded for “Black Excellence” by Kaysha Aranda and “This Tree” by Ateeya Richards, respectively. Both are students of Edward P. Yorke High School. Students from high schools across Belize were invited to submit an original poem related to this year’s theme “Black Health and Wellness.” The winning entries are on display at the U.S. Embassy, and the young poets recited them in a video on the Embassy’s social media account.
